There is much evidence of Neolithic (New Stone Age 4,000-2,500
B.C.) activity in Co. Sligo.
Co. Sligo is only 3% of the
total area of Ireland, yet about 176 monuments are found here-
aprox. 14% of Ireland’s total number (1260).
The Court
tombs’ most distinctive feature is a roofless courtyard, which is
mostly U-shaped.
The courts appear to have been a place
used for ritual and access to the gallery. The gallery is divided
into a number of chambers, and was originally covered by a long
cairn.
Most of the cairns have been partially or totally
robbed of stone, leaving some of the upright stones of the chamber
exposed. |
