We did a huge amount of work on this
project, here is a small selection of that work: |
The Parke Family
The Parke Family were English Planters from Kent. The first of the
Parkes to come to Ireland was Sir Roger Parke who came over to
Sligo in 1601 with Sir Roger Jones. Roger Parke married Sir
Roger Jones’s sister, Alice in 1609 and they had two sons- Robert
and William. It was the elder son Robert, who resided at
Parke’s Castle (or Newtown Castle which is its correct name).
The other son, William, lived at Dunally, near Sligo town. One of
William’s descendants was Surgeon Major Parke, whose statue stands
outside the Natural History Museum in Dublin. Robert, who lived
at Newtown Castle, has no descendants named Parke. He married Ann
Povey (from Roscommon) and they had three children- a daughter
Ann, and after a long gap of possibly fifteen years, a son Robert
(1661) and a daughter Mary (Maggie, 1663). Sadly, both Robert and
Maggie were drowned on Lough Gill in 1677 when Robert was 16 years
old and Maggie was 14 years old. This left Ann Parke as Captain
Robert Parke’s only successor and heiress. Ann married Sir
Francis Gore.
